What is a Traineeship?

Traineeship is a paid employment under a Training Contract with structured training.

Traineeships are generally 1 to 2 years in duration and may be either the end of your career training or compliment higher traineeship and apprenticeship qualifications.

A Traineeship is similar to an Apprenticeship. You undertake training which leads to a Nationally Recognised Qualification. The nominal duration is usually 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time. Traineeships are available in a wide range of industries and occupations that do not already have a traditional Apprenticeship.

An employer who takes on a trainee teaches that person the skills associated with a particular job. This is usually done in stages. As a Trainee, you will start under supervision with easier tasks and then progressively move through to more challenging tasks.

Requirements for a Traineeship

  • The training contract is for a defined term with a minimum average of *15 hours per week to be worked over a four-week period, including on and off-the-job training arrangements.
  • The relevent Industrial Award, Certified Agreement, Australian Workplace Agreement etc applicable to your actual workplace permits Part-Time Employment.
